Description

The Sam J. Lucas Jr. Scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Lucas, a former officer and director of SCI, and benefits employees and dependents of employees of SCI Shared Resources, LLC.

Requirements to Apply:

  • Must be an employee, spouse, or child of a current employee (including children for whom an employee is the legal guardian) of SCI or any of its subsidiaries
  • Full-time or part-time employees must have been employed by SCI or any of its subsidiaries for a minimum of one (1) year prior to the application deadline
    • Employee must be in good standing
    • Part-time employees must work a minimum of 1,000 hours per year to be eligible
  • Must plan to be a full-time or part-time undergraduate student at an accredited college, university, trade school, or mortuary school.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 (unweighted) scale. 
    • Applicants with an unweighted GPA of 2.49 or below are not eligible.
    • If you are a graduating high school senior, please review this guide for instructions on converting your GPA to a 4.0 scale. GPA should be rounded to two decimal points.

About the Scholarship Award:

  • Multiple scholarships awarded for the 2026-27 academic year. Award amount varies by college/degree type:
  • Multiple scholarships awarded annually in the amount of $5,000.
  • One-time award; previous recipients cannot reapply.

  • What can the scholarship be used for?
    • The scholarship will be mailed directly to the student's college to be used towards tuition, required academic fees, and/or book expenses.
    • Scholarship funding cannot be distributed directly to the student. Funding cannot be used for room and board, rent, meal plans, parking passes, or other similar living expenses.

  • Are there any requirements I must meet if I'm selected as a scholarship recipient?
    • Recipients must pursue a degree from at an accredited college, university, trade school, or mortuary school. 
    • Recipients must enroll in at least 6 credit hours for both the fall and spring semesters (or be enrolled at least part-time according to your school if it is on a different system).
    • Recipients must submit college enrollment information online through GHCF Scholar the summer before the academic year begins. This information is required in order for the scholarship check to be mailed to the student's college. Instructions will be included in the student's award letter.

What Is Needed for This Application?

  • Financial information
  • Two (2) essays
  • One (1) recommendation form completed online
    • If the applicant is an SCI employee, the form must be completed by the employee’s location or department manager.
    • If the applicant is the child or spouse of an SCI employee, the form can be completed by a school principal, teacher, counselor, civic leader, clergy, or employer.
  • Transcript to confirm your GPA (unofficial transcripts are accepted)
  • Education information
  • Resume Form (involvement in school activities, community service, and employment)

  • This application is offered in English, Spanish, and French (Canada).
